Meet the people who were willing or unwilling participants in the events that made headlines. In cemeteries, gravestones hint at our history – tales of unsolved murders, love lost, mystery, tragedy, health epidemics, scandal and sacrifice. 'Grave Tales' reveals more than the headstone can ever convey by tracing the tumultuous journeys that lead to these final resting places. Thoroughly researched by journalists Helen Goltz and Chris Adams, these stories re-create the lives of those whose graves are featured.

I think Caroline Stevenson’s, ”The Tainted Cross” is close to solving the puzzle. The evidence is strong that there was a connection/link between the murder of Alfred Stephen Hill at Oxley (Qld) on and the Gatton murders 16 days later. The close link is the coincidence of the slightly malfunctioning firearm used in both murders. I think (Revd) Edward Carus-Wilson murdered Stephen Hill at Oxley and slipped/passed the firearm to either Richard Burgess or more likely Thomas Day that same day. I think Thomas Day was the man at the sliprails but the evidence suggests that he was assisted in the triple murders of the Murphys by a gang of local Gatton hooligans whose identity remains unclear. The identity of other members of the gang is part of the puzzle but suggests as Stephanie Bennett alleges that at least one member of the Murphy family was involved. I must add that a Mr Paul Middleton(2013) has written quite a strong criticism of some of ’s conclusions. An elected head and former police officer told me about 12 years ago that the murders could be solved very quickly if the grave of the murdered people could be exhumed again and DNA analysis applied!!? Clearly the Qld Police of the day were not equipped to handle such a complex case and the wall of silence from the Murphy family and the general Gatton community certainly militated against the efforts of Chief Inspector and his team. The mystery continues. PS. I am very doubtful of the veracity of Mr. Vic Lilley’s assertions and conclusions in ”Gatton Man”. ’s and ’s works are closer to solving the mystery.
